Teething Baby March 28 2017
Teething usually begins when your little one is around 6 months old (although some babies start earlier or later than this). The discomfort your baby will experience when those tiny teeth start coming through may make them restless and irritable, which means this can be a difficult stage for mum and dad too! We have put together a few helpful tips for this tricky time:
Give them plenty of water to replace fluids lost though dribble.
Having plenty of dribble bibs on standby that protect baby' clothing and chest and less outfit changes needed.
Teething foods such as frozen bananas and peeled apple wrapped in muslin gauze (so little bits don't fall off and cause choking) are soothing on baby's gums.
Give them a teething toy to chew like the original Sophie the Giraffe, and the natural teether or why not let them chew on some specially designed handmade teething jewellery choose from bangles or necklaces made from high-quality food grade silicone to soothe inflamed gums.
And lastly protect those chins with some soothing organic baby coconut oil and distract them with hugs and play.
We hope this helps with the teething stage, good luck!

Behind the Brand – Buddy + Bear
At Desmond Elephant we love supporting and sharing the story of emerging brands and mums that want to make a difference. We have just started to stock Buddy + Bear products at Desmond Elephant and can see immediately why they are so popular with kids and parents alike. Today we get to share our catch-up with one of its' inspiring founders Sarah Weston
How and why did you start Buddy + Bear?
Jon and I are both designers; we met at university in beautiful Bath almost thirteen years ago (eek, where does the time go!). Aside from the odd freelance project, we’ve never really had the chance to work together and always dreamed of building an outlet for creating things we love. We just weren’t quite sure what.
When our little boy Sammy came along last year, the maternity leave turned out to be the perfect time and reason for us to give it a go. As new parents, we were fast discovering that there’s a real lack of beautifully designed, yet fun kid’s home products here in the UK. It seemed like the perfect fit for us to have fun with.
What did you both do before and how does this experience help you now?
As a kid, I always had my heart set on being a nursery teacher. My first Saturday job was in a children’s bookshop and I’ve also spent the odd summer nannying. I guess you can say our love of little ones is essential to what we do and we hope that shines through.
We also both have different skill-sets that compliment each other well. Over the years, we’ve worked in different sectors of graphic design; Jon in print, web and branding and I mostly in food packaging. Most recently, I was in house at M&S but over the years I’ve designed for all sorts of companies big and small, working with photographers, illustrators and food stylists. My time at Paul Smith was a valuable insight into how someone’s passion and honest hard work can turn into something so iconic, whilst retaining a genuine down to earth wit at its core. Such an inspiration.
Can you briefly describe the design and manufacture process?
Our ideas come from all kinds of places. We’ll brainstorm around the kitchen table whilst Sam naps, or in the car on the way to the supermarket. It can be hard to switch of as there are always a hundred things to be done. But the ideas usually come when we least expect them and I’m slowly realising you can’t force these things! I guess that’s what’s nice about working for ourselves – we don’t have to be tied to the desk when the ideas aren’t flowing. On the flipside, being a full time mum at the same time very much dictates when the work has to happen!
Once we’ve come up with our design we’ll send it to our printers (sourced via lots of internet research) for a proof. It’s always a heady mix of nerves and excitement opening up a new delivery. There have been times where is hasn’t quite gone to plan but most of the time it’s great. We’ll then set a day aside for a photoshoot when our little home gets transformed into a photography studio. Jon will then be in charge of images and I’ll write the copy. It’s a real team effort and we’re definitely learning a lot as we go.
Who would you most like to buy something from Buddy + Bear?
Our dream is for someone to be reminiscing over their favourite childhood Buddy and Bear plate in thirty years from now. We’re suckers for nostalgia and love remembering the simple things that made us smile as kids - so we’d like our products to be part of those warm family moments around the kitchen table. Hopefully, they’ll be treasured and loved without being too precious to use on a daily basis.
What do you hope for the future of Buddy + Bear?
We’d love to branch into different areas of homewares; we’ve got so many ideas up our sleeves that we have to be patient and concentrate on doing each thing well and building upon that slowly but surely.
How to you balance being a mother and creating a successful brand?
It’s not easy. I think, especially on Instagram, you can be fooled into thinking that a lot of people find it a breeze when the reality is that anybody working hard and taking care of a family and a home will be juggling an awful lot.
The balance and structure is definitely something I am still striving to achieve; there are many nights working into the small hours and our house has had to give in to stock being all over the place. Having a toddler that likes to get into everything can be a bit of a nightmare so we tend to get it all out once he’s tucked up in bed. That way, I’m lucky enough to be able to hang out with him and do things he likes during the day and get back to work as soon as he’s asleep. Jon works full time and whilst we’ve sacrificed most of our down time, it’s all worth it. We really love what we do and there’s still plenty of time to catch up whilst packing parcels.
Based on your knowledge is there anything you recommend to other parents looking to start their own business?
The Internet is such an amazing tool for finding everything you need and you can start a business with very little investment. We started with a couple of ideas to see what would work and went from there. That way there was nothing to lose. Social media is also an incredible way of getting instant feedback - even before you’ve had anything produced you can present some mock-ups and get a feel for whether it’s going to be a success or not. Just don’t be afraid, it’s a brilliant adventure!

New Brand Oeuf NYC at Desmond Elephant August 07 2015
We’re huge fans of Brooklyn-based label Oeuf NYC, pronounced UH-F, meaning egg in French and delighted to announce that we are welcoming it as a new brand at Desmond Elephant.
Created in 2002 by Sophie Demenge and Michael Ryan, a French/American husband and wife team when their first child was born and they felt the market was in need of children's furniture with quality, practicality and function - packaged in beautiful designs. They then started designing children's clothes with their unique beautiful knitted designs.
Their incredibly luxurious Fair Trade alpaca wool used in their knits comes from Bolivian farmers who practice sustainable farming with each knit hand knitted by a cooperative of 25 women in Bolivia who spin the wool into yarn, colour the wool using low-impact and metal-free dyes, and knit the yarn into amazing pieces. Alpaca wool is super soft and lanolin free making it a great hypoallergenic fibre for kids.
Check out the sweetest animal hoodies & hats and adorable angel sweater as well as this apple cushion. A brand that both parents and kids will adore, right?

Its been a while but we wanted to go to back to our series ‘Behind the Brand’ in which the companies that design and make the fabulous products sold at www.desmondelephant.com explain what they do, how and why. Today we share our catch-up with Love Soap Ltd and one of its’ inspiring founders Emily.
How and why did you start Love Soap Ltd?
We started the business for a number of reasons really. After having children we wanted to be able to work more flexibly and so working for ourselves seemed the best way to do this. Having tried out a number of other bath products with our own babies we identified a gap for a product that could combine both natural and organic ingredients with good performance. Charlotte already works alongside her husband in his soap making business and so had the knowledge and supplier contacts to get us started…
How does Love Soap differ from other children’s bath products?
We are one of very few children’s brands to be certified organic by the UK Soil Association. This means all of our products, the ingredients we use and the process in which we make them have been thoroughly inspected and adhere to strict certification criteria. We are also proud of the packaging we have created for our products which includes hand drawn illustrations and have more of a fun design element to them also.
Why haven’t you used Parabens in Love Soap products?
Parabens are preservatives used widely in the cosmetics industry. These chemicals have been linked to cancer and are potentially harmful to health. That said, it is important to use preservatives particularly in water based products such as shampoo and body wash otherwise these develop fungi and bacteria which are also harmful to health. We absolutely do not use Parabens in our products and only use minimum amounts of preservative (less than 1%) to ensure our products remain safe to use for 24mths after opening. These are mostly naturally derived and have been approved for use in organic beauty products certified by the Soil Association.
What are you hope for the future of Love Soap?
To continue to grow the business in a way that remains manageable for us. We are already building a loyal base of customers that come back regularly to stock up on their children’s bath products and that’s a great feeling.
How to you balance being a mother and creating a successful brand?
It’s a constant battle but being quite realistic and honest about what can be achieved in a set amount of time and setting boundaries so only being available for work tasks during specific times. I often reply to emails in the evening once my daughter is asleep in bed and generally get immediate responses often from other mothers also running their own businesses. I feel lucky that I have the opportunity to manage work that way.
What to you hope to achieve in the future?
To continue to be part of the organic beauty movement helping to raise awareness of the benefits of choosing organic and natural skincare. We also hope to extend our range of children’s skin care products and introduce a range for mothers too.
Based on your knowledge you have any beauty products you would recommend for mothers?
We love Pai Rosehip Bioregenerate Oil – magic stuff for any sleep deprived Mum!
Thank you so much Emily, we are massive fans of what you do at Love Soap and can't wait for the mama range. To see the full Love Soap collection Click here
Make it Rain with the Plui Rain Cloud May 12 2015
Everyone loves clouds. There are cloud pillows, cloud lights, cloud computing - but we let the cloud do what it is supposed to do: rain!
The cool new Moluk Pluï Rain Cloud Toy is a fluffy little cloud that fills with water when dunked and then rains down when the hole on top is blocked with a finger. To babies and toddlers it's magic, but secretly they're learning some mild physics. It's BPA-free, phthalate-free, and latex-free and has a hidden mechanism that allows it to be opened for cleaning. Imaginative fun.
